An Evening at Vauxhall Gardens

Changing Exhibitions Gallery

Explore how glass helped define the social rituals and cultural values of 1700s Britain.

May 20, 2021 7:00 pm–8:30 pm

Join Curator Christopher (Kit) Maxwell as he hosts an evening of celebration and lively discussion surrounding Vauxhall Gardens—the backdrop to the exhibition In Sparkling Company: Glass and the Costs of Social Life in Britain During the 1700s—and a place described as “a pleasure garden like no other”.

Kit will be joined by:

  • President and Executive Director Karol Wight
  • Historian David Coke, author of Vauxhall Gardens: A History (Yale University Press, 2011)
  • Jeff Tessler, production designer for the PBS period drama, Poldark

Together, they will offer a glimpse of elite British culture as experienced at the gardens, one of the leading venues for public entertainment in 18th-century London. The evening will be punctuated with select music from the period performed by an ensemble from the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes as we celebrate the opening of this dazzling exhibition.
